A Magical Visit
Tacey was honored to have a special guest, Erick Olson. Erick is a professional magician. Tacey loves magic and performing for family and friends! It is fun to see a blind child doing optical illusions! The local news came to watch Erick teach Tacey some new tricks. They then interviewed everyone. Retinoblastoma International is a great resource about Retinoblastoma.
Sena was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma at four-months-old. Her pediatrician referred us to an ophthalmologist because she noticed a white reflex instead of red while performing an eye exam at her well-child exam. Sena began chemotherapy four days after diagnosis, on November 6, 2001, her brother's second birthday.
My beloved grandson, Joseph Hollander Bergsma, died needlessly from metastatic retinoblastoma on December 22, 2000. Joey was three years old. Awareness would have saved his life. I was taking pictures of the tumor reflecting the light and did not know it…these pictures would have saved his vision and his life. More importantly, if an ophthalmoscope would have been used to screen his eyes at his 15 month or 18 month well-baby exam…Joey would be alive. Joey’s journey was short, but his message is powerful. The last year of his life was a miracle.
